Silage tarps can be used to incorporate green manure, prepare new garden spaces, create stale seed beds, and keep beds weed-free between plantings. The silage tarps work through a process called occulation from the root word “occult” or “to cut off from view.” Underneath the tarp, weed seeds germinate and quickly die, unable to photosynthesize. During the heat of summer, this process can take as little as two weeks. Our two silage tarps are fifty by fifty feet and come with enough empty sand bags for you to fill and place at least every five feet to keep your tarp in place.
